- How To Write An Effective Cover Letter
College graduates often end up stuck with the same question: “What is my next step?”
We don’t want to talk about the already obvious here, we know every fresh graduate know that they’ll have to apply for a job. But the real next step is learning how to properly make yourself marketable, that is, to create a good first impression on you potential employer.
If you don’t have the experience, you’ll just have to use what’s immediately available to you and make it work to your advantage. The most direct way to create an impact on your prospective employers is to write a really good cover letter.
Most employers usually won’t have the time to look through all your qualifications and read about your experiences. This wisest thing to do is catch his attention from the moment you start your introduction. Make him want to know more about you, and let him notice that you are not just interested in the job, but also in the company.
Every part of your cover letter has its own purpose, and when planned carefully, may be able to help you land that job. For now, let us focus on the introductory part which is the most crucial part if you really want to draw a good image in your prospective employer’s mind.
To start, here is an example of a good cover letter introduction:
I graduated from the University of the Philippines where I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology, Major in Multimedia Systems. Professor Delbert Santos mentioned the job opening in Visa Company and encouraged me to grab this opportunity. I carry a positive outlook in life and am always looking forward to learning new things.
In the sample introduction above, notice how it gave importance to mentioning the facts first before anything else. You can state these in any order: your college or university, your course and major and don’t hesitate to mention if you graduated with honours.
In the next part, tell your employer where or how you heard about the job opening. This will give him a hint that someone entrusts that you can do a good job by urging you to apply to his company. Lastly, tell him a few of your best qualities. But don’t just tell him good qualities, write about those that will be useful for the position you are applying for.
As a last advice for those starting on their cover letters, remember to be completely honest even if you are trying to impress someone. That way, you won’t have to deal with false expectations from your employer.
